Happy Thanksgiving everyone! For the past few years the green bean casserole dish has been my responsibility which I really enjoy. I am also in charge of bringing the wine, my family knows me well :) Last year I thought I would fancy up the dish and got a great recipe from a very well known chef here in DC. I sauteed mushrooms, onions, garlic...and it took hours. I bought fresh green beans and made the cream soup from scratch. My kitchen looked like a bomb went off in it. I must say it smelled and tasted delicious but I was exhausted before I even arrived at my sisters house. The family didn't really care/notice the difference. We are proud rednecks from Kansas and I just wanted the same green bean casserole my Mom made when I was a kid. So here you go! I got the recipe from http://www.slowcookeradventures.com/ with a couple of changes for our personal taste and to feed a family of 20. This took me a total of 10 minutes and now I am watching the Macy's Day Parade with my son!! Life is good!!
2 - 14.5oz. cans Green Beans, drained (I used the big 50oz Hanover can)
6 oz. French Fried Onions, divided
1 can Cream of Mushroom Soup ( I used Campbells 25oz can)
2/3 cup milk ( We are a soy family)
1 tsp. soy sauce
1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 Tsp. garlic powder
1/8 tsp. pepper
Place the drained green beans at the bottom of your crock.
In a bowl, mix the cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder and pepper.
Mix half of the French Fried Onions in last.
I like a lot of onions but not all the family does so I did 1/4 of the package of Frenchs.
Pour this mixture over your green beans and mix it up.
Her recipe called for pouring the rest of the onions over the top in the crock pot. I feel they are soggy when I do that so last
year we placed the rest on a flat sheet (use non stick tin foil if you have it) and turned the oven to 350 degrees. Start with 5
minutes, we like them really crispy so I kept checking back every few minutes until the were perfectly brown. Place the casserole from the crock pot in your dish and top the onions out of the oven!! :) Yum Yum
Cook on LOW for 4 hours or on HIGH for 2 hours.
